Link variables to these new Common Variables
Switch this option on if you want Standard Variables to be linked to this newly creating Common Variable.
By linking variables to the Common Variables, Impact sites can modify the allowance formulae used within your standard when it is run without needing to edit the standard. Linked variables cannot be modified in your standard.
If you don't link these variables, then you are free to edit them as you like in this standard and they cannot be modified by Impact sites when the standard is run.
