Create Upper

The woodsize is first created, using the parameters defined in the MTS on the Male Base page.

This is followed by the symbol patterns defined in the MTS on the Symbol Patterns page, Male section.

There are three modes for this tool, selectable on the edit bar. These are:-

Offset from design

Edit bar controls

Select an entity within one of the one-up designs. The offset entities, with drag handles, will be added to the chosen one-up to give something like this:

This will enable the following tools:

  • Add Point – split a line at the chosen point; you can specify a fillet radius on the edit bar
  • Edit Point – this is the default mode; drag a handle to a new location
  • Remove Point – straighten adjacent entities by removing their intersection point
  • Corner – pick two entities; all entities between them will be removed and they will be joined

When in Edit Point mode the edit bar will now look like this:-

The Precision specifies the step as the cursor moves whilst you are moving the drag handles. The optional offset is the distance from the identified entity to the new drag handle location.

The Edit menu now has the following tools enabled:

Fillet

This is as described in the Create Lower section.

Bridges

This is as described in the Create Lower section.

Pin Symbols

Edit bar controls

The Mode drop down is the list of Double Symbols as defined in the MTS on the Male Upper page, under Pin Symbols. The inserted symbols will be rotated by the given angle.

Use the Delete button , or Delete all pins from the context menu, to remove pins that you’ve added. The Delete button is a toggle that switches you in and out of Delete symbol mode.

The Ok button or Ok option on the context menu is used to exit this sub-tool.

Strengthening bar

Edit bar controls

Enter the required width of the strengthening bar and then identify both ends of the bar. Identifying the ends is similar to the Line > 2 Points tool, but you can click anywhere within the upper and the strengthening bar will be added by intersecting the parallel lines with the inner offset entities of the upper.

The pictures below show a before and after example.

The right-click context menu for the Create Upper tool has the following options:

  • The edit bar controls are repeated
  • Copy section – Copy a section of the selected upper part as described here
  • New – Add a new upper part
  • Select – Select an existing upper part, ready for editing
  • Edit – This option is not enabled for this tool
  • Copy– Copy the selected upper part to another one-up; select a pick-up and a put-down point; the edit bar will have these options:
    • Auto copy
    • Rotate 180deg
    • Linked
  • Delete – Delete the selected upper part

The Copy options are described in more detail here.

Offset from extents

Edit bar controls

For this mode you are prompted to Select a one-up for the new upper part. The tool will then create rectangles offset inside the cut extents of the one-up, using palettes and offsets as defined in the MTS on the Male Upper page.

Edit bar controls

As you move the cursor around the offset entities you will see them become highlighted and the edit bar mode will change accordingly, showing Top, Left, Right and Grip.

This is similar to the Rectangle from extents option when creating the Lower parts.

2 Click Mode

Switching this option on requires you to identify the entity to be offset from with the first click, followed by a second click to define the direction of the offset.

Whilst using this tool there will be a context menu available:

  • Edit bar options are repeated
  • Finish this upper part - Finish editing the selected upper part and return to the New tool
  • Cancel this upper part - Delete the selected upper part and return to the New tool
  • Edit offset entities – Use the drag handles to edit the entities
  • Edit perimeter - This sub-tool makes the Fillet and Bridges tools available on the Edit menu
  • Copy section – Copy a section of the upper part as described here

The following edit tools are available when using the Edit perimeter sub-tool:

  • Add Point – split a line at the chosen point; you can specify a fillet radius on the edit bar
  • Edit Point – this is the default mode; drag a handle to a new location
  • Remove Point – straighten adjacent entities by removing their intersection point
  • Corner – pick two entities; all entities between them will be removed and they will be joined

As before, when in Edit Point mode, the edit bar will now look like this:-

The Precision specifies the step as the cursor moves whilst you are moving the drag handles. The optional offset is the distance from the identified entity to the new drag handle location.

The Edit menu now has the following tools enabled:

Fillet

As described here.

Bridges

As described here.

Pin Symbols

As described here.

Strengthening Bar

As described here.

Freehand from points

This mode allows you to merge two or more upper shapes together.

Edit bar controls

Mode - From the pull down list choose either 2Pt. Arc or 2 Pt. Line.

Auto Union - This switch causes the Union tool (described below) to be started as soon as the freehand shape has been created.

Rewind  - Remove the most recently added point.

Cancel - Cancel this mode and exit the Create Upper tool.

Finish - Exit the Create Upper tool.

You are prompted to choose multiple points to create a perimeter.

Select your chosen Mode and create a closed shape, overlapping two or more existing uppers. Close the shape by clicking the first point again.

Once you have created the closed shape, the normal tools (Fillet, Bridges, Pin Symbols, Strengthening Bar) together with the Union tool will become available. As well as these, the Add Point, Edit Points (again, this is the default), Remove Point and Corner tools are available.

Union

Choosing this tool causes the overlapping shapes to be merged together, as shown in the example below:-

Before the Union - the Cyan coloured rectangles are the Freehand created shape.

After using the Union tool. The two uppers have been merged.
